Collection Information: | Refer to Microbiology Collection Information by Source. | ||
Transport Information: | Deliver to lab immediately at room temperature. All specimens must be signed into the laboratory. | ||
Reference Client: | If unable to deliver to lab immediately, store and transport at 2-8° C. Specimen must be received in lab within 4 days. | ||
Causes for Rejection: | Improperly labeled, incorrect container, contaminated, insufficient quantity, improper/delay in transport. | ||
Reference Range: | No Group B streptococcus isolated. Only Group B streptococcus, Streptococcus agalactiae, will be reported from this screening culture. | ||
Additional Information: | Susceptibility will be performed on positive cultures. | ||
Recommendations for intrapartum prophylaxis for Group B streptococci are penicillin and ampicillin. Cefazolin is recommended for penicillin-allergic women at low risk for anaphylaxis. For those at high risk for anaphylaxis, clindamycin and erythromycin should be tested and reported. Vancomycin may be used for clindamycin or erythromycin resistant GBS in high-risk patients. |
